THE MOONBASE by Herbarianband THE MOONBASE by Herbarianband
This was a commission for the front cover of the 1990 DWB Christmas Special featuring The Moonbase photonovel. I was later asked to add Patrick Troughton's face when the painting was reprinted in the DWB Interview File in 1993.
It is painted in acrylics and is a tribute to the classic black and white era of the programme, it's base-uder-seige theme re-surfacing in The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People!

One of the scariest versions I've ever seen.   Good Lord, I tip my hat.  Congratulations.  You're really taken the prize here.

That's very kind of you!  I originally wanted to expose a section of skull beneath the faceplate but the editor said no :(

Glad you get the scary aspect of it !!

The older Cybermen...well...it was harder to forget they were once human.  Sorry the editor didn't let you see your vision...perhaps you can paint it to suit yourself someday!

I've said it before but there was something infinitely more creepy about the hint of faces beneath those cloth masks of the very first Cybermen. At least we got to see the skull inside the Cyber head in THE PANDORICA OPENS!

That's what I love about the old Cybermen. You know there's a human being in there.... even the redesign in Nightmare in Silver still has them stomping around, and now they can take their heads off and turn them 360 degrees. I guess there's only a brain or a head left.

I don't remember this type of Cyberman ever having human hands, that was only in The Tenth Planet. But I guess that was pretty hard to know back in 1993.

You're right, there were indeed no Cybermen with human hands in The Moonbase - thing was we were given quite a free reign with artistic licence on these covers and I loved the idea of the human hands so much I kept them in; I also wanted to paint part of a decaying human face showing through the helmet but the Editor said NO!!!!!

I think you nailed the spooky thing.  What would have been equally disturbing if the hands and body shape were female.  I always imagined the cybermen to be the ultimate in non-discriminating when it comes to "human resources"

Now that WOULD have been freaky! A bit like Jackie Tyler in THE AGE OF STEEL but with cold, visual confirmation Waaaah!

Spot on!  I'd love to see your take on this concept but with "proper", Troughton era models as opposed to the new ones (which are just brains in a suit of armour).

Too bad you didn't get to paint for The Tenth Planet then.

I've always thought it creepy that they still had human hands.

I agree -- I've only seen 2 of Patrick Troughton's serials so far, and already he's my favorite -- quite possibly surpassing even New Who Doctors, which is saying something as I was brought into the show with Christopher Eccleston. & Jamie -- I just can't get enough of that accent! Definitely my favorite Doctor/Companion pair.

Yes, they're a great double-act, Hines & Troughton; recently saw THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN episode 2 for the first time - wow, what a classic, creepy 25 minutes of excellent 60s television!

Think the human hands came from The Tenth Planet, but after seeing my cover the costume designer for The Moonbase (Daphne Dare) remarked on how cool the hands were - I had to sit down for week!!!

Love the human hands on the front cyberman. Were there any like that in this story? I forgrt, but it's a good reminder of their origins.
